I practice the more traditional method known as aural tuning. This means that, rather than read from a machine, I tune by ear. I begin by playing an audible tone to set A4 to 440hz, moving down then up the piano, listening to various intervals, to establish a soundscape which adapts to the piano at hand and allows it to sound its best.
