Maiden in 1895
In 1895, Maiden consisted of little more than a smattering of homes and the Providence Mill cotton factory. At this point in time, the town was only 12 years old. The Wycoff, Drum, and Keener families made up a large portion of the citizenship and worked the old cotton mill. The Propst, Boyd, and Rabb families contributed by constructing many of the first buildings and homes.
The Chester & Lenoir Narrow Gauge Railroad extended its line to Maiden in 1882, and can be seen on this map, but sadly, just a few years after its completion, tragedy struck the railroad. In 1886 a locomotive explosion caused by the negligence of its fireman led to his death. A second rail accident, this time caused by a train derailment, took place in 1913, during which several people, including rail passengers, were injured. Thankfully, there were no fatalities in this second accident.
Maiden in 1970
Moving forward to 1970, we can see how many more homes had been built within the town limits. Notice how Providence Mill, around which the town was arguably formed, is still present. The building is still in operation to this day but now serves the area as an event and wedding venue.
