Map of Maiden, North Carolina, from 1895

We invite you to compare these two maps of Maiden, North Carolina, almost a century apart!

Maiden in 1895

In 1895, Maiden consisted of little more than a smattering of homes and the Providence Mill cotton factory. At this point in time, the town was only 12 years old. The Wycoff, Drum, and Keener families made up a large portion of the citizenship and worked the old cotton mill. The Propst, Boyd, and Rabb families contributed by constructing many of the first buildings and homes.

The Chester & Lenoir Narrow Gauge Railroad extended its line to Maiden in 1882, and can be seen on this map, but sadly, just a few years after its completion, tragedy struck the railroad. In 1886 a locomotive explosion caused by the negligence of its fireman led to his death. A second rail accident, this time caused by a train derailment, took place in 1913, during which several people, including rail passengers, were injured. Thankfully, there were no fatalities in this second accident.

Maiden in 1970

Moving forward to 1970, we can see how many more homes had been built within the town limits. Notice how Providence Mill, around which the town was arguably formed, is still present. The building is still in operation to this day but now serves the area as an event and wedding venue.

Maiden Small Business

Supporting local Maiden businesses is a great way to give back to our community and keep our neighborhood thriving.

Here are some of the best ways you can show your local shops and restaurants some love:

Shop local whenever you can. Instead of heading to the big box stores, pop into the small businesses right here in Maiden. You’ll find unique products and have the chance to connect with the owners. The money you spend stays right in our community.

Eat local. Dining at family-owned restaurants is a tasty way to support our community. Support local restaurants, cafes, and food trucks. Not only will you get delicious, fresh food, but you’ll be keeping your neighbors employed.

It’s not always about money, there are other ways to support our Maiden businesses:

Leave positive reviews. Take a few minutes to write glowing reviews for your favorite local spots online. This helps spread the word and encourages others to check them out.

Follow them on social. Give a shout out to local businesses by liking, commenting, and sharing their posts. It’s a simple way to boost their online presence.

Recommend them to friends. When someone is looking for a great place to eat or shop, point them toward your local faves. Word-of-mouth is a very powerful tool! Not just tell them…. the next time you want to get together with friends, instead of meeting out-of-town, recommend meeting at one of our restaurants or vibrant night-spots!

Volunteer or donate. See if any local organizations, nonprofits, or community centers need extra hands or financial support. Lending your time and resources can make a big difference. The Maiden Business Association is a great place to start!

At the end of the day, choosing local helps keep the Maiden community strong and vibrant. So get out there and show some love to the small businesses that make our town special.

Neighbors greet each other by name as they pass each other along Main Street, and for our neighbors in need, there’s always someone willing to extend a helping hand. Community-Oriented Event Promotion

One of the MBA’s first exciting offerings is community-oriented event promotion. • Shared Cost, Shared Success: Event promotion through the MBA allows for shared advertising costs, making marketing ventures more accessible for smaller businesses.

Plans for Small Business Grants

MBA is in the process of setting up small business grants, slated to roll out soon. These grants are designed to provide financial aid to deserving businesses looking to expand or innovate but are held back by funding gaps.

  • Boosting Growth: With these grants, small businesses can afford to take on bigger projects or refine their operations for better service delivery.
  • Increased Innovation: Easy access to funds could mean more room for innovation, helping your business stand out in today’s competitive market.

A Bright Future Together
