First found in eastern Pennsylvania in 2014, the spotted lanternfly (Lycorma delicatula) is an invasive insect pest that is now established in New York, Delaware, and Virginia and it has recently been found in Tennessee and North Carolina. Early detection is critical in stopping its spread and minimizing the devastating effect it could have on NC landscapes and agricultural crops, particularly grapevines, fruit trees, and a wide range of hardwood trees. The messy honeydew they secrete also causes problems by attracting ants, wasps, and black sooty mold to neighborhoods and businesses, affecting property values, tourism, and human health.

If you see a spotted lanternfly, you should do the following:

· Take a photo and report the sighting on the North Carolina Department of Agriculture online report tool at ncagr.gov/SLF

· Kill the insect. You can kill the insect by squishing it or placing it in a container of rubbing alcohol.

· Look for additional spotted lanternfly in the area. If your report is spotted lanternfly, you will be contacted by Plant Industry Division staff for more information.

Remember: See it. Snap it. Report it.

There are no known biological controls or native predators for spotted lanternfly, so early detection and rapid response is the only way to keep this highly invasive pest out of our state. You are the best resource to watch for invasive species and help prevent the spread of the spotted lanternfly in North Carolina.

Additional Steps You Can Take Include:

Become familiar with Tree of Heaven (Ailanthus altissima), the preferred host plant for spotted lanternfly. Note the location of trees in your area and check them regularly in the summer for immature insects (May-September), adults (July-December), and egg masses (October-June).

Check your vehicle for egg masses/juvenile or adult insects if traveling through infested areas. As an extra measure, take vehicles through the car wash before returning to NC.

If you own a vineyard or orchard, NCDA&CS recommends you remove all Tree of Heaven on your property as a preventative measure against this pest.

Get the word out. Talk to people and businesses in your community. Make them aware of this potential pest and what to look for.

The old Maiden Elementary

Maiden Elementary is closed. Crews will soon begin demolishing the nostalgic icon. Meanwhile the new school is showing real progress!

With a mix of excitement and nostalgia, the Maiden Elementary community prepares to bid farewell to the old school building that has stood as a beacon of learning for generations. As the wrecking ball looms, we can’t help but feel a tinge of sadness, for this institution has been the backdrop to countless memories, triumphs, and formative moments in the lives of students past and present.

Yet, in the shadow of this ending, a new beginning emerges. The nearly-completed modern school facility represents a leap forward, promising state-of-the-art resources and an environment tailored to the needs of today’s students. While we may mourn the loss of the old, we must also embrace the promise of the new, recognizing that progress often requires change.

As we fondly commemorate the legacy of Maiden Elementary, let us do so with a deep appreciation for the role this institution has played in shaping our community. The echoes of laughter, the lessons learned, and the bonds forged within these walls will forever be etched in our hearts, a testament to the power of education and the enduring spirit of this place. Though the building may crumble, the memories and the impact it has had will live on, guiding us as we embark on this new chapter.

We managed to sneak in during the farewell ceremony to take a few snapshots.

Many have expressed a real love of the old school, having been a staple in Maiden, where they went to school, where their children went to school and some even their grandchildren. They are sad to see it go with so many memories to cherish.

On the other hand, there is an excited buzz to see what memories the new school will hold for future generations.

Some of The Needlecrafters Group

When you think of Maiden, North Carolina, you might not immediately picture a thriving hub for needlecrafts. However, this unassuming town is home to a community of passionate fiber artists who are keeping traditional crafts alive.

The Needlecrafters Group

The Needlecrafters, a local collective, has become a beacon for embroiderers, knitters, crocheters, and needlepoint enthusiasts from all walks of life. What started as a small group of friends gathering to share techniques and chat around the table has blossomed into a vibrant organization that offers teaching the basics to newcomers, a friendly atmosphere and maybe even a sweet snack!

Whether you’re a seasoned stitcher or a complete beginner, The Needlecrafters welcomes everyone with open arms. From intricate embroidery to bold colored knitting and crochet pieces, the level of skill and artistry on display is truly impressive. But more than that, this group fosters a sense of belonging and camaraderie that is hard to find elsewhere.

I visited the lively group today at their normal meeting space within the Maiden Library and spoke with them as they enjoyed their once-a-week meeting. In speaking with accomplished needlecrafter and group leader Allyson, I was guided along the path of learning all of what this group has to offer.

Here is what I learned: Of their current nine member group, Jill knits lap blankets and hats as a charitable contribution for cancer patients! Each member, when their birthday arrives, is normally given a small party while attending the meeting, with a cake and sparkling grape juice. Every year, right around Christmas the group meets at a restaurant to enjoy a sort of Christmas Dinner.

The group is open to all! No age limitations or previous knowledge required! They are willing to teach anyone willing to learn and yarn and hooks are provided! The Maiden Library also offers a Yarn Library where you can grab some yarn that catches your eye, or gift the library any yarn you no longer need.

Where & When you may ask? The Needlecrafters meets every Tuesday at 4:00pm at the Maiden Branch Library, 11 S A Ave in Maiden. There is No Cost.

If you have any questions you may call Allyson (828) 994-7692 or find them under Clubs in our Business Directory.

This crafty group has been meeting this way since 2007! Now you know!!

road traffic accident Maiden NC

Just days after a new 4-way stop was installed at the East Maiden Road/Buffalo Shoals Road intersection, the location has already experienced a motor vehicle accident. Local residents are calling out for flashing lights or rumble strips to warn motorists, with several folks complaining about trucks and delivery drivers parked at the gas station / convenience store blocking the view for incoming motorists as they approach the intersection. This location has long been a “hotspot” for motor vehicle accidents.
