Complete Crosswalk Package at Main Street / Main Avenue

Town of Maiden, NC — Hwy 321 Business

We, the undersigned members of the Maiden Business Association and downtown supporters, request that the Town of Maiden prioritize and formally support a complete high-visibility crosswalk package at the Main Street / Main Avenue intersection (Hwy 321 Business).

Why it matters to business: Many customers and residents currently avoid shopping downtown or only visit one side of the street because crossing feels cumbersome and unsafe. Proper, highly visible crosswalks with pedestrian signals and right-turn protections will make it easy and inviting for people to walk between businesses, visit more shops in one trip, and spend more time and money downtown. This is both a safety improvement and an economic development tool for our commercial core.

    • Complete high-visibility marked crosswalks on all four legs (add the missing east-leg crossing across E Main St and the north-leg crossing across N Main Ave; upgrade existing crossings to match).

    • Install Walk / Don’t Walk pedestrian signal heads on all approaches.

    • Prohibit Right Turn on Red at the intersection.

    • Add a YIELD TO PEDESTRIANS marking/sign for the right-turn movement from W Main St onto S Main Ave (location of prior incidents/near-misses).

These changes will protect customers, employees, residents, and visitors crossing between local businesses (Piedmont Hardware, Main Events, Salon On Mane, Memories On Main, etc.), improve downtown walkability, and support economic vitality. Because this is a state highway, Town support is essential for NCDOT Division 12 to evaluate and implement.
